Six Plaintiffs Bring Product Liability Lawsuit Against Tristar Products, Claiming Power Pressure Cooker XL is Defective

Six plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania against Tristar Products claiming that their Power Pressure Cooker XL is defective and dangerous. The plaintiffs claimed that they suffered devastating burn injuries when a Tristar cooker exploded during ordinary use despite Tristar’s claim that the product is safe to use.

The Philadelphia lawsuit is one of more than 20 lawsuits claiming that the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL was improperly designed and that the faulty design caused serious burn injuries due to scalding hot food and liquids exploding from the machine. Claims have been filed in state and federal courts.

The Philadelphia lawsuit claims that the supposedly safe product features failed while they were cooking, which resulted in the lid coming off while the cooker was still under pressure. The explosion caused serious burns to all six plaintiffs. The plaintiffs had either bought or been given Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL Model No. PPC-790. The plaintiffs were all from outside Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia lawsuit claims that these seven other Tristar pressure cookers are also defective:

  • PC – WAL1 and PC – TR16
  • PCXL – PRO6
  • PPC-7770,770-1,780 and 780P

Tristar’s alleged conduct

Product liability lawsuits can be brought if a product is defective or if the product marketing is misleading. The complaint asserts that Tristar compounded its faulty design by advertising just the opposite – that the product was safe and functional. Tristar advertises that its Power Pressure Cooker XL model has a “lid locking mechanism” which is built to prevent the lid from opening while the pressure is on – which has been alleged by many consumers to be false. Tristar repeatedly claims that the products are built according to the highest standards. The company claimed in advertisements that its Power Pressure Cooker XL was one of the safest products of its kind.

Tristar is further accused of ignoring ten other similar complaints that were filed with the Consumer Products Safety Commission, a federal governmental agency, and ignoring many similar lawsuits. The Philadelphia plaintiffs argue Tristar should have recalled the dangerous pressure cookers and taken steps to correct the design.
