Tire Failure Causes Crash in Bryan County, Georgia

A GMC Yukon carrying 10 people, eight of them children, crashed on Interstate 16 after a rear tire failure on Sunday afternoon just south of Savannah, according to Savannahnow.com.

The Yukon flipped four times and all the windows were broken. All 10 occupants were ejected from the SUV, according to Bryan County Deputy Sheriff Carroll Clifton. Two severely injured victims were carried by Life Flight helicopter to the hospital. The remaining victims were taken by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

Tire blowouts are some of the most common failures and are linked to a defective design or faulty manufacturing. A common scenario with a defective tire failure is the tread peels off, causing the rest of the tire to separate and the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Summertime heat can amplify the problem as it affects tire pressure, which in turn destabilizes the tire.

Harris Lowry Manton has extensive experience handling tire failures and the catastrophic injuries and casualties that follow. In Chhetri v. Michelin, HLM lawyers secured a $16.52 million verdict on behalf of a widow and her family in a case stemming from a faulty tire. The van was carrying refugees to work the day of the wreck. HLM represented other victims in the wreck as well.

There are some safety measures to reduce the risk of tire failure. First is to check your tire pressure and make sure it matches the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. Check the treads for wear and tear. Worn out tires are more likely to fall apart. For detailed safety information, see this National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guide.
