Breaking News: Tractor-trailer collision in Savannah

BRYAN COUNTY, GA – Early morning on Wednesday, April 22, news broke of a tractor-trailer collision on I-16, about 20 miles outside of Savannah, GA. The tractor-trailer failed to slow down in time in stop-and-go traffic at about 6 a.m. which was caused by an unrelated crash on the same interstate.

As a result, the tractor-trailer slammed into an SUV and rolled over a smaller passenger car, which then burst into flames. The truck finally stopped after hitting the back of a tanker. Georgia State Patrol said there were seven vehicles total involved in this chain-reaction crash, including two tractor-trailers. Georgia state patrol reported that there was no fog or smoke at the time of the incident. “It was clear as a bell,” reported Sgt. Chris Rodewolt.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the driver of the tractor-trailer had not been cited for the accident as the investigators continued to work to piece together the tragic incident.

This accident took the lives of five Georgia Southern nursing students in their junior year who were on their way to their first clinical of the year at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital, a hospital about an hour away from Georgia Southern University.

Another three individuals were injured in the accident, but their condition is not known at the time of this article.

University flags were flown at half-mast on Thursday to honor the students. Additionally, Georgia Southern students were invited to a memorial on Thursday at 7 p.m. which was coordinated by student leaders.

This incident is so very heartbreaking, and our hearts go out to the families of the victims of this tragedy.
